Much Needed Improvements to Commercial Truck Safety
Car safety technology is a perennially hot topic, but less attention is typically given to commercial trucks, which are significantly deadlier than cars. Your chances of surviving a crash with a tractor trailer are significantly less compared to a car, including monster vehicles like the GM Hummer. Volvo, one of the world's largest truck makers--not to be confused with Ford's Volvo car division--said today it will equip it trucks with sensors that alert the driver with an audible signal if the truck accidentally starts wandering from its lane. Along with that, Volvo will offer Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which serves as a cruise control that uses a radar unit linked to the engine and brakes to maintain a set safety gap behind the vehicle in front. For whatever reason, these safety features are just now finding themselves into a few heavy trucks after being available for years.
Major savings from low emission Nissan gas fleet
A move to LPG lift trucks featuring Nissans exclusive Tri-Cat engine management system has created major savings in exhaust emissions and materials handling costs for the UKs market leading manufacturer of raised access flooring. Kingspan in Hull is one of the worlds largest producers of the systems used to raise floors in office buildings for the installation of cabled services. A typical system comprises floor pedestals supporting chipboard panels that are encased in galvanised steel. With three lines at the Burma Drive site turning out over 150,000 finished panels every week, the pace of production is impressive - and the materials handling requirement is intense. Some 50 lorryloads of high density chipboard in 2.4 x 1.8m panels are received each week, together with palletised drums of adhesive and 50 tonnes of steel coils.
MTV to pimp out a '65 Impala with 800hp biodiesel for Earth Day
Next week on MTV, it's a "Very Special Edition" of Pimp My Ride. In honor of Earth Day coming on April 22, the crew of the popular MTV show that proves on a regular basis that having a large budget in no way guarantees good judgment will be updating a 1965 Chevy Impala. Generally, the best way to have a 65 Impala help the environment would be to tow it to the nearest car crusher and then melt it down to make new cars. That, however, wouldn't be nearly as entertaining as the approach taken by the crew at Galpin Auto Sports, and it certainly wouldn't merit inclusion here. Instead, they've tossed the old pre-EPA engine that was in the Impala. GM provided the team with a brand new Duramax diesel V-8 as is used in the automaker's full size trucks and SUVs, and after a few minor tweaks, it was installed in the Impala.
City looks at the problem of Enid's low-weight bridge crossing ...
There are only eight bridges in Enid that will support the weight of the city's 35-ton ladder truck, city officials have learned.A bridge collapse after an Enid Fire Department ladder truck crossed it last month prompted the city to look at how bridges are maintained in Enid and how many will support the weight of fire trucks. In addition to fire trucks, there are a number of other heavy vehicles that use Enid streets and bridges every day, and if the bridges have a low-weight capacity and are not properly marked they could be disasters waiting to happen.Enid Fire Marshal Ken Helms said a review of bridge ratings that followed the March 14 collapse of a bridge on West Randolph showed only eight bridges in Enid will support the weight of the ladder truck. It also showed other low-weight bridges that other 15-ton to 20-ton fire trucks should not safely cross. The bridges in Enid heavy enough to hold the weight of the ladder truck are Maine and 5th, 40 tons; Rupe at Cleveland, 36 tons; 30th north of Willow, 36 tons; Breckinridge and 66th, 41 tons; U.S.
