Province Tracking Biodiesel Potential in Trucking

There's now proof positive bio-diesel really can be a clean-energy alternative when it comes to long-haul trucking.

Manitoba Energy Minister Jim Rondeau says a pilot project with Border Chemical has demonstrated the potential.

Last October, two transport trucks were sent on their way. One of them using five-percent biodiesel ran 50-thousand kilometres with temperatures reaching well below -40. There were no reported problems. There was no difference in the performance of the two trucks, only a reduction in diesel smell.

The test concludes later this spring.

Employers look to trucking course to address shortage

A workforce training program plans to launch a short course for aspiring truck drivers in Minot later this month.

Employers in the trucking industry who have had concerns about a driver shortage met with officials of Job Service North Dakota and Northwest North Dakota Workforce Training in Minot Wednesday to discuss whether more training might improve the employee pool.

The conclusion of employers was that training can only help. With that blessing, Workforce Training plans to extend its two-week trucking course from Williston to Minot. The Williston course, offered in partnership with Halliburton Energy Services, prepares students to obtain a commercial drivers license. It is more focused on oil-field work than Minots course will be.

Local firms need a card in their hand to trump the oil industry in the labor market, Jason Skar of Skar Trucking, Kenmare, told representatives of the job agencies.

OTA credits smooth operation of CBSA security policy to ...

TORONTO, Ont. -- The OTA is taking partial credit for the successful implementation of the new Canada Border Services Agency security enhancement policy because it has been educating its members on ways to eliminate border delays due to failed PARS (Pre-Arrival Review System) transactions. The policy, which can into effect Apr. 1, mandates carriers to use line release customs clearance at the border.

Following the CBSA announcement indicating that failed PARS shipments would be returned to the US, the OTA board developed a position regarding CBSA enforcement of the policy and a communication strategy targeting shippers who utilize underperforming custom brokers. The OTA says that while the trucking industry can partially share in the blame for this problem, experience has shown that PARS failures are also often the result of customs brokers not filing entries in a timely manner.

Green benefits of slower trucks touted Local trucking firms are

A touch of green may just be the ticket to limiting the speed of all tractor-trailers in Ontario to a 105 km/h maximum, says the head of one of this region's largest trucking firms.

Mark Seymour, president of Prescott's Kriska Transportation, is a longtime advocate of mandatory activation of speed-limiting devices on transports.

While he's always pushed the initiative from its safety and cost benefits, he said recent endorsement by environmental groups can only help.

Green groups, of course, are touting the emissions and fuel-conservation aspect of lower speeds.

"The fact that it's been moved to the environmental front isn't necessarily a bad thing. That's as likely to get the attention as anything else is given that so much is being made of (the environment)," Seymour said in an interview Thursday.
