Monster Trucks Are At the Fresno Fairgrounds

The big trucks roared across the dirt and flew on top of cars crushing them. This is just a glimpse of the demolition at last night's Monster Jam.

The event continues through the weekend, with one show Saturday night and another Sunday afternoon.

And topping off the fun, Action News Reporter Jessica Peres had the honor of singing the National Anthem Friday night to get the event started. Copyright KFSN-TV, www.abc30.com, and myabc30.com. 'Virtual Humans' Sought for Crash Tests

DETROIT -- An international consortium of nine automakers and two parts suppliers is asking researchers for proposals to develop "virtual humans" -- computer programs that will help them design safer cars and trucks.

The Global Human Body Models Consortium LLC says the computer models will provide better simulations of crash injuries than current crash dummies.

In an announcement scheduled for Sunday at the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress in Detroit, the companies say they have requested proposals from 40 research and university groups worldwide, and plan to create five centers of expertise for different parts of the body and two centers for full body models.

The companies which formed the consortium a year ago are DaimlerChrysler AG, Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp., Honda Motor Co., Hyundai Motor Co., Nissan Motor Corp., PSA Peugeot-Citroen, Renault SA, Takata Corp., Toyota Motor Corp.

Vacaville man faces charges in fatal truck crash Friday

A 31-year-old man from Vacaville was identified Saturday as the fatal victim of a collision between two pickup trucks on Friday in the Suisun City area, which a witness said was sparked by reckless driving.

The victim's full name was being withheld, but the California Highway Patrol reported the arrest of 32-year-old Robert Pettitt, also of Vacaville, on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.

According to a departmental release, the suspect and victim were both northbound on Grizzly Island Road around 7:15 p.m. on Friday when the victim, in a 1989 GMC pickup, attempted to overtake Pettitt, who was driving a Ford F450 pickup. The vehicles were approaching the intersection with state Highway 12 and Sunset Avenue.

The victim steered the GMC pickup onto the road's southbound lane to pull even with Pettitt's northbound vehicle, but for some reason the vehicles collided and went airborne, according to the report.

"They just closed the operation down in Michigan. They just don't need the capacity," Evans said.

The company still has a retail operation on Jackson Road - Astro Truck Accessories Inc. - but its manufacturing operations have been consolidated.

The building is 38,084 square feet, which includes 2,594 square feet of office space. The facility sits on 3.08 acres on North Lima Center Road.

Astro Manufacturing produced fiberglass truck caps in Dexter since 1972.

Swisher is trying to sell the property for $1.2 million.

Richard Gere urges truck drivers to have safe sex

New Delhi, April 15 Terming truck drivers as an important lifeline of the growing Indian economy, Hollywood star Richard Gere urged them to practise safe sex and help prevent HIV.

'Since truck drivers stay out of home for nearly 25 days a month, they succumb to their desires which finally ends up in spreading HIV. I have interacted with thousands of drivers in India and have been urging them to become responsible,' Gere told reporters here Sunday.

He was pointing to the high prevalence of HIV among the truckers and the habit of many of them of having sex with many women, especially prostitutes, while away from home.

Gere, along with Bollywood actors Sunny Deol and Shilpa Shetty, joined nearly 4,000 truck drivers Sunday evening to celebrate 'Seena Taan Ke', an event aimed at highlighting the contribution of truckers and the importance of safe sex practices.
